Usain Bolt wins 100m final in driving rain at World Athletics Championships in Moscow
THE lightning came. The rain came. And then Usain Bolt delivered.
Not even Mother Nature could stop the greatest sprinter in history from reclaiming the world title which he lost two years ago.In driving rain Bolt charged home over the final 20m to grab American Justin Gatlin and win his fourth major championships 100m gold medal in 9.77sec.
"I am happy but I wanted to do better," Bolt said. "My legs were sore after the semi-finals, I don't know why, but the world record (9.58) wasn't on so I came out just to win.
"Back in Jamaica, they do not expect less than that from me. They always expect me to dominate!"
Given the controversy surrounding the blue riband event following the positive tests to Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell in the lead-up, the sport needed Bolt to shine.
And it didn't need Gatlin - who clocked 9.85sec for silver - to
steal it from him given the American has twice been suspended in his
career for doping.
The victory is another step in the Jamaican superstar's quest to become a legend of sport and mentioned alongside Michael Jordan, Pele and Muhammad Ali.
Bolt, who turns 27 later this month, now has an incredible six Olympic gold medals and six world titles to his name.
Only Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson have won more world titles with eight although he has a chance to join them given he still has the 200m and 4x100m relay to come.
After scorching heat all day in the Russian capital, the skies closed in half-an-hour before the men's 100m final with the good omen of lightning bolts ringing out around Luzhniki Stadium.
During the introductions the ever relaxed Bolt pulled out a pretend umbrella but he quickly snapped back into business and this time there were no mistakes coming out of the blocks.
Bolt was disqualified from the 2011 final in Daegu after false-starting which meant his countryman Yohan Blake - who missed these championships because of injury - took the title.
He bounced back to win the sprint double at last year's London Olympics and will look to complete it for a third time in his preferred event of the 200m later in the week.
Earlier in the women's 10,000m another two-time Olympic champion delivered again with Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba a brilliant winner in 30min43.35sec.
IAAF: Okagbare wins silver, ends Nigeria’s 14-year wait
Blessing
Okagbare got Nigeria’s first medal at the IAAF World Championships in
Moscow on Sunday after leaping 6.99 metres in the women’s long jump to
finish second behind USA’s Brittney Reese (7.01), who became the first
woman to win three long jump titles at the world championships.
It was Nigeria’s first medal since 1999
when Gloria Alozie won silver in the women’s 100m hurdles and Francis
Obikwelu won bronze in the men’s 200m at Seville, Spain.
Okagbare said, “I give glory to the
almighty God, I thank Him for everything, I also thank Him for using me
because he could have used anybody, I thank Him for using me. I also
thank all members of my family, friends and relations for their support.
“It’s actually harder than people think because this is a big stage. I was focussed on my jumps and didn’t get distracted.”
Reese, who won the event in 2009 and
2011, had managed to qualify for the final after a below-par performance
in Saturday’s qualifying round. She started with a 6.50m leap but
eventually recorded three foul jumps in her attempts.
It was the only seven-metre jump of the
competition and left Okagbare, who briefly led in the first round with
6.89 and later improved to 6.99, with silver.
Serbia’s Ivana Spanovic was third with a national record of 6.82m on her fifth attempt.
Okagbare will be on the tracks today for
the semi-finals of the women’s 100m. she qualified from the heat with
11.03 seconds, while Gloria Asunmu also advanced with her 11.27 seconds.
Nigeria’s Stephanie Kalu crashed out in the heat after running 11.67 to

Teenage Boy Drowns At The Beach

Despite NEMA’s warnings regarding the Bar Beach, these instructions were however not heeded.
According a witness, the beach was filled with a huge number of fun seekers, with only two life guards on duty at the beach.
The teenage boy was spotted by few people who were standing at the tip of the beach and according to the video footage, rescue efforts by three guys did not pay off as they could not summon the courage to go close to the teenage boy due to the high current of the beach, the boy struggled to stay afloat till he eventually drowned.
However, fun seekers continued with their fun like nothing happened.
As at the time of this report, no one came out to complain of their missing teenage boy as a lady who initially thought it was her brother raised an alarm while rescue operations were on, but she was calm after she found out that it was not her brother. source: CHANNELS TV
